Ecologically worthwhile – making economic sense
The sustainable balance between economics, the environment and company success is the result of many in-house initiatives at Curt Richter.
Curt Richter has recently been able to reduce CO₂ emissions by 100 mg per kilometre and also lower fuel consumption by approx. 10.8%. This is the equivalent of actual savings of 3.5 l/100 km. The reduction in fuel consumption is partly due to the use of EURO 5 vehicles and partly due to company driver training.
For a better climate
One specific goal of the Green Freight Europe initiative is to develop a software tool to calculate and monitor the emissions caused by the logistics along the entire transport chain. All the emission data is included in the calculation work across various countries.
The British company EST (Energy Saving Trust), which specialises in this kind of software, has already received the assignment to create the application, which is supported by a central database. As a result, following the analysis of the data, it is possible to develop additional measures, which will lead to an optimisation of the emissions balance.
Certification in line with ISO 14001:2004
Curt Richter has been introducing certification in line with ISO 14001:2004 during 2012 in order to implement the company’s ecological goals. Curt Richter is using this international environmental standard to introduce continuous improvement processes in the field of environmental performance.
Curt Richter integrates its suppliers in the continuous improvements as regards environmentally-friendly processes. Making do without packaging and exchanging pallets and obliging suppliers to take back and recycle hazardous materials are all integral parts of the supplier agreements.
Environmental pollution is supposed to be separated from growth in transport services by switching traffic to modes of transport that cause lower pollution levels. More than 25% of transported goods have been shipped on intermodal services per annum at Curt Richter during the past few years. This figure jumps to more than 60%, if regional traffic, which is not suitable for intermodal transport, is excluded. Rail transport saves 57 g/km in CO₂ greenhouse gases in comparison with road traffic. So Curt Richter is making a significant contribution to switching traffic to rail services, the most environmentally-friendly mode of transport.
Reduction of empty runs
The latest telematics systems enable Curt Richter SE to permanently monitor and optimize its scheduling of freight along economic and ecological lines.
Curt Richter SE's fleet management system has supplied data e.g. operating difficulties, the way the vehicle handles and the driver’s style at the wheel in a transparent manner for many years. By permanently assessing these issues that are relevant to economics and ecology, it is possible to identify weak points and improve them quickly.
Our personnel are trained how to drive in an ecological manner during regular driver training sessions. This enables Curt Richter to achieve savings in both a monetary and ecological way. Lower fuel consumption and less wear on tyres and brakes prove the effectiveness of the measures that have been adopted.
In addition to keeping an ecological eye on complete supply chains, Curt Richter focuses its attention on a mixture of proven measures, including lower fuel consumption.
Curt Richter in particular receives better international information about the CO2 footprint of shipments as a result of its membership in the Green Freight Europe initiative.
